Apple lets loose with new iPads and more
Apple’s ‘Let Loose’ event held earlier today was a big hit, especially for iPad fans. As expected, new iPad models were announced, along with upgrades to popular accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil.
Here’s a rundown of today’s announcements, starting with those incredible new iPads…
Meet the 2024 iPad Pro
“This is the biggest day for iPad since its introduction,” Apple CEO Tim Cook
Let’s begin with the highlight of the show. Apple revealed its new iPad Pro, available in 11-inch and 13-inches,, with the bigger size being the thinnest device Apple has ever created.
For the first time outside of the iPhone and Apple Watch, both sizes will have OLED displays. This is the screen tech you need for richer colours, more deeper blacks, and much better contrast. According to Apple, it’s the world’s most advanced display.
The iPad Pro sports a 12MP rear camera that can shoot 4K video, and the camera flash has been improved with the aim of making scanning documents easier. Plus, the front-facing camera is now on the longer side of the iPad – which means you can now make work video calls or family FaceTime get togethers in landscape mode.
The new iPad Pro is also the first device powered by the Apple’s M4 chip, which promised to deliver faster performance and more AI features. Here are a few technical stats that Apple revealed:
- M4 is capable of 38 trillion operations per second – 60 times faster than the first neural engine that was on the older A11 chip a few years ago.
- M4 can deliver the same performance as M2 with half the power, which should be great news for its battery life.
- 10-core GPU, with 4 times faster rendering performance than the M2 Chip.
- New CPU with up to 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores, making performance 50% faster than the M2 Chip on iPad Pro.
The new iPad Pro will be available in silver and space black colours. Minimum storage capacity has doubled, so you can choose from 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB.
Meet the 2024 iPad Air
For the first time ever, Apple has introduced a larger option for the iPad Air. It’s now available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, with a high-resolution Liquid Retina display bringing everything to life.
The re-design sees the front-facing camera moved to the longer side of the iPad (just like the iPad Pro), so you can now make all your video calls in landscape mode.
Both sizes now feature the powerful M2 chip, replacing the M1. With a powerful CPU, GPU and Neural Engine it’s nearly 50 per cent faster than the previous generation. It also offers greater energy-efficiency for all-day battery life.
The 2024 iPad Air will be available in blue, purple, starlight, and space grey colours. Choose from 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB storage capacities.
Apple Pencil Pro
Apple also unveiled its new Apple Pencil Pro. It’s available for both iPad Pro and iPad Air users, and has some exciting new features to give you more artistic control:
- Barrel roll. A new gyroscope allows you to rotate the Apple Pencil Pro for precise control of your shaped pen and brush tools.
- Haptic feedback. The custom haptic engine delivers precise feedback you can feel. When you squeeze or double-tap, you’ll feel a light pulse confirming the action.
- Apple Pencil hover. You can write and sketch with even greater precision using this preview feature. Before the Apple Pencil touches down on your display, you see a virtual shadow. Less deleting, more getting things right first time!
- Double tap. Speed up your work by quickly switch between tools – like a pen and eraser – with a quick double tap.
Apple Pencil Pro pairs, charges and stores magnetically on the side of your iPad. And if you lose it while you’re out and about (or at home), you can easily locate it in the Find My app.
Magic Keyboard
The iPad Pro will snap into the new Magic Keyboard, that now has a larger trackpad and an added row of function keys. Apple says this will make using an iPad Pro feel “just like a MacBook”, with the trackpad bringing the precision you need for tasks like editing spreadsheets. Magic Keyboard also has a ‘floating’ design that lets you attach it to a surface magnetically, and then adjust it to the angle you’re most comfortable with.
